sauna advocacy

I’ve spent much of my career in proactive public health infrastructure as a multi-modal transportation planner, and I’ve come to believe that our region’s shorelines hold untapped potential for supporting public well-being.

Saunas, especially when paired with access to cold water, offer a simple yet powerful way to promote mental and physical health, foster community connection, and encourage year-round engagement with nature. I’m exploring how saunas can be integrated into public spaces as water-dependent programs or infrastructure—making it easier for people to access our waters during the darker months when mental health challenges often intensify. This effort also reflects a broader cultural opportunity: to honor the Nordic / cold climate traditions and maritime history that have shaped the Pacific Northwest. With several water-adjacent public saunas currently operating in the Seattle area, my focus is on expanding access in a thoughtful, equitable way that serves the needs of our communities.
