sauna advocacy

I’ve spent much of my career in preventative health infrastructure as an active transportation planner, and I’ve come to believe that our region’s shorelines hold untapped potential for supporting public well-being.

Saunas, especially when paired with access to cold water, offer a simple yet powerful way to promote mental and physical health, foster community connection, and encourage year-round engagement with nature. I’m exploring how saunas can be integrated into public spaces as water-dependent programs—making it easier for people to access our waters during the darker months when mental health challenges often intensify. This effort also reflects a broader cultural opportunity: to honor the Nordic / cold climate traditions and maritime history that have shaped the Pacific Northwest. With several water-adjacent public saunas currently operating in the Seattle area, my focus is on expanding access in a thoughtful, equitable way that serves the needs of our communities.
